Site Updates and rejig

You may of noticed the site has been in 'offline' mode recently. This was because I was wanting to migrate to a new version and had a few issues and needed time to fix them.

unfortuately ill health got in the way.

The site is now back, but I've disabled a few items to streamline it temporarily as a lot of content is either incomplete or wrong or both. I'm working on a entirely new version of the site, dubbed Geekgothgrrl 2.1 for now.

The content will be along the same lines, but the methods of how it is put together and presented will be very different.

New Kitten!

It's here!

Kitten Pic Kitten Pic 2

He's currently exploring the front room, running around like a mad thing.

Shadow has run off. Smokey has growled and hissed at him, and remains wary.

He has no name so far other than 'trouble', and Nat's nephews have called him 'Trabby', Nat's favouring 'Swiper' at present.

Drupal 6 has been released!

Today I noticed Drupal 6 has been released.

I shall I think, work to port my site to it over time.

First to do is to get the 5.x install updated and sorted, etc.

I'll do that locally I think, and then upload it when I'm happy.

This will see the switch away from Gallery2 I think.

After that Drupal 6 will be set up as a seperate install and I'll slowly migrate to that locally.

Updates

Finally got around to updating Drupal to the latest 5.x release, and all the modules too.

Various life issues have happened however, so my living arrangements have been thrown into a bit of uncertainty today.

As such I'mnot sure if I'll get the dev server up and running to do the new site... oh well... I might... watch this space!

New aquisitions and software changes.

I've recently gotten an Apple iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation. It's only a 1Gb player, but I can forgive that limitation for the simple fact that it is:

  • Tiny - VERY tiny!
  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight

Other things to come here soon include:

Site updates and so on...

So, I've not really gotten round to doing anything in the way of updates to the site really of late... mostly due to not being home much in the last 4 months.

However, I think soon I will try to revamp the site, and get the re-worked version at home sorted out too.

I'll then start adding Blog entries about doing various things in OS X, Linux, etc as I'll then have a repository of information thats useful to me, and possibly to others. Things such as:

Using xfsdump/restore Using Linux software raid Using LVM2

And more..

I think I might of found a Gallery2 replacement!

Right, I've been a bit unhappy with Gallery2 of late, a few things haven't been working right, and I just find it generally bloaty and clunky.

So, I've been looking for a replacement for it.

I think, with a combination of several Drupal modules I've found the answer. It is:

  • CCK
  • Imagecache
  • Views (pluse Views Bonus Pack)
  • Custom Pagers
  • Imagefield
  • ThickBox

Site re-working.

I am intending to work on a re-worked site with new/improved content and tidied up generally.

This will probably also include theme changes, maybe just tweaks initially to LiteJazz, but possibly also an entirely self created theme.

Depends how well my efforts go of course!

I can now of course develop the site, back up the current one and then do a migration with relative ease. This is very useful!

backups! yay!

I've till now had to rely on Paul to do Database backups for drupal+gallery2 installations on geekgothgrrl.co.uk as he had access to the cPanel, not me.

Now I don't need him to do so unless something goes badly wrong with the site, as I've just set up and installed the backup and backup/migrate modules.

The first lets me do a complete backup, including all files and db tables to a single file.
