Ubuntu Netbook Remix (NBR) Aspire One thoughts

Last night I took the plunged, put the Ubuntu NetBook Remix (NBR) 9.04 image onto a USB flash drive. Install worked well, although first time round the Aspire One locked up after selecting timezone. Ran the install via the Live environment and it went smoothly.

Have updated the software and added updated repositories for Pidgin, Last.fm, Medibuntu (media codecs etc), Back In Time (kinda similar to Apple's TimeMachine) and dropbox.

Fixed the issue of the LED for the wifi not working, by issuing the command:

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

After that, the LED now flashes when connecting, and also flashes to show data transfer. Not quite how it was under Linspire, but it works well.

Sleep and Hibernate seem to work without issue.

Responsiveness is ok, can be a little sluggish at times. But the way the interface in Ubuntu NBR works is very slick and easy to use. I /really/ quite like it! The way the program title bar is positioned and the placement of the icons for running applications works nicely too. The loading animation is also a nice touch.

The biggest problem I currently have is the reletively short battery life. Really will need to get a 6-cell battery for it at some point.

Otherwise, loving the Aspire One!

In other news, the server continues to work well. I think I will definitely have to upgrade the heatsink/fan as it seems not to cope under heavy load too well (75+ degress C isn't good imo).
