Of UPS failures, RAID upgrades and broken heatsinks...

So whilst I was away over the weekend my UPS, which has for a while now been complaining at me about the batteries being knackered, decided to cut out when it complained, so turning the power off to m

Debian apt upgrade issues - SOLVED

Recently I've been running into an error that is making upgrading my Debian server seem impossible.

Mood:
Annoyed

*sigh* server continues to act up...

Home from camping with alt.fan.pratchett friends near Hay-on-Wye, to find my PC hadn't in fact turned off but had crashed when shutting down. Not really a big issue though that.

Made good use of the Aspire One with T-Mobile USB at the campsite, winning a pair of Wharfdale speakers for 50p. I think they're a bit better at least than the old Aiwa speakers I've been using. If not they'll do as a pair of computer room, along with either another amp or the current amp upstairs with a 'new' surround amp downstairs.

Ongoing memory problems

I sat down about 20mins ago to start the work to get the new site up and running. Only to find gigantico was down. Why I wondered?

Rebooted, hung at trying to boot the kernel, oops.

Rebooted again and selected memtest86+. Sure enough memory errors. Took memory out and put one stick in on its own, no errors.

Server oops, and Need For Speed

The other day I noticed the server had locked up on me. Odd I though, so I reset it. Within minutes it locked solid again, with kernel crashes on the monitor I'd left plugged in to it.

So I rebooted and ran Memtest86+ (always handy to make sure it is in your default grub list for such occasions!).

Aspire One stuff, Linux and so on

When I was thinking about my previous posting originally, I had also thought about writing some things about Ubuntu and Linux, including things regarding my Aspire One.

As is usual, if I don't write it down when I think it, I utterly forget it!

Anyway.

I've realised recently that I've been almost exclusively using GNOME on Ubuntu on my PC. This marks a bit of a shift really for me.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix (NBR) Aspire One thoughts

Ubuntu NetBook Remix screenshot

Last night I took the plunged, put the Ubuntu NetBook Remix (NBR) 9.04 image onto a USB flash drive. Install worked well, although first time round the Aspire One locked up after selecting timezone. Ran the install via the Live environment and it went smoothly.

Have updated the software and added updated repositories for Pidgin, Last.fm, Medibuntu (media codecs etc), Back In Time (kinda similar to Apple's TimeMachine) and dropbox.

So far so good...

So far so good with regards to server. It has been left running now for a while, no signs of any problems. Ran a short stress test, would of let it run longer but it was causing the CPU core temps to hit 80 degrees C! the stock intel cooler doesn't seem able to cope with it under heavy load, may be time for another, we'll see.

Compiling a kernel also didn't provide any hiccups.

Will leave it running downstairs and check on it tomorrow. At least I can access it again, and hence access the music and my email again.
