Inglourious Basterds
Film Review Information
This again was originally a brief review posted in a blog post. Reproduced here in a bit more detail as it better belongs in the review section of the site.
When Kat told me she had secured tickets to see Inglorious Basterds by Quintin Tarantino, I was really quite eager to see it. Amongst my favourite films I have to include Pulp Fiction, so another Tarantino film was worth a go at the very least, especially as the tickets were free.
The film starts out at the beginning of the second world war in France during occupation. It is here that two of the central characters are introduced, namely Shoshana and Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). It is a well scripted tense scene, which Waltz plays superbly.
We are then introduced to Lt. Aldo Raine's (Brad Pitt) group of Jewish-American soldiers, known as 'The Basterds', each chosen specifically to spread fear in the German ranks, with their Nazi hunting.
The film them follows several plotlines as Shoshanna encounters a German soldier who brings her cinema to the attention of his superior Groebbels, who then wants to put his newest film on at Shoshanna's cinema. Shoshanna then plots to seek revenge for the death of her family.
The other plotlines see Lt. Raine and his squad hunting German soldiers, killing post, and marking those they don't with a Swastika.
The film wraps up with the plotlines coming together with Lt. Raine tasked with blowing up the cinema with Hitler and other top German heirachy due to be there.
I really enjoyed the film, found it rather humerous in a lot of places. And in typical Tarantino style, plenty bloody!
Definitely a must see film if you like Tarantino's films. It is bloody and so on, but not overly so. It is also rather comical in all the right ways I found. Basically, Tarantino spent ten years planning this film, and it shows through, although again I think it was a bit drawn out in places.
