Drupal 5, Gallery2 and stuff

Today I effectively retired my SparcStation 20 ('morrie') from use. I'd put a fresh install of Solaris 9 onto it and took it round to Paul's to try to get the 40-45Gb of mp3s off of it and stored on his network.

Except that didn't entirely go to plan. As the 47Gb 5.25“ drive decided it wouldn't work. So that is 44Gb of my music collection wiped out!

I'll get a ~400Gb+ SATA hard drive for the dual PIII server ('puppy'). The idea was to put the mp3s onto this when the PIII server was upgraded with more memory and the SATA card installed, etc.

When I get that drive (and an 120Gb IDE drive for my Mac) I'll be able to put all of the mp3s on my Athlon64 ('nanook') onto it and free up a shed-load of space there. I'll probably reinstall Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 6.10 onto that after I've done all that as I'll probably have a mostly empty 200Gb drive, a probably empty 120Gb drive and a possibly empty 80Gb drive on there.

I may even think about trying to relocate the 120Gb drive to 'puppy'.

I'll be setting up Solaris 10 on an Ultra 5 workstation probably sometime in the new year, so that should give me something to play around with really.

All of this really means I'll have to re-install:

  • OS X 10.4 on the Mac (onto newer bigger, faster drive)
  • Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu (onto Athlon64)
  • Solaris 10 SPARC onto Ultra 5

My Mac and the athlon64 machine are both in need of sorting out.

Oh and I'll probably go round to Komputer Krazy to grab a Pioneer DVR-111D drive for my Mac so I have DVD±RW drive for it. That'll make re-installing OS X a lot easier.

All of that aside, I've been playing around with Gallery2 on my local server and I like it really. It seems also to integrate well into Drupal 5 and looks quite smart. I'm thinking I might get Paul to set up Gallery2 on his hosting server so this site can make use of it and I can move images to that rather than the somewhat clunky image module stuff. Being able to directly export from iPhoto is really nice! I could if need be export from Picasa2 as well, but thats a bit more convoluted.
