It seems I've got two things to work now.

Gallery2 is installed, set up and working. I had trouble with getting iPhoto to export to it. But managed to fix it with adding a line to .htacces.

Adding that line to the .htaccess in the drupal directory seems to have sorted out the image.module and image_gallery.module issues I was having too (the whole reason I installed Gallery2).

So, that is good news.

I can now upload the images from iPhoto again and get all the images sorted out properly.

I'm unsure which I'll use really. I might keep a small amount of images on the drupal image.module and put the bulk onto gallery2. I have a bit more control over the photos with that I think. I can link to the gallery2 images from drupal too and embed it.
